Established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the day highlights the critical role that oceans, ports and ships play in connecting markets, people and products around the world.

The purpose of this celebration is to raise awareness of the essential role of maritime transport in the development of global trade. Every year, the IMO establishes a slogan to highlight the challenges and opportunities in the sector, and this year, 2025, it is Our oceans, our obligation, our opportunity.

Maritime transport sustains a large part of global trade and is the most widely used means of transporting goods for import and export at an international level.
