In order to sell products in the European Union (EU), it is essential that they carry the CE marking, a certification that indicates that the manufacturer has evaluated the product and that it complies with the safety, health and environmental protection requirements established by the EU.

This marking is mandatory for products manufactured both inside and outside EU member states if they are sold on the European market. However, according to EU specifications, certain products do not require this marking. Companies must ensure that the product complies with all relevant requirements before including the marking.

Placing the CE marking on products that are not subject to EU specifications is illegal. The manufacturer is responsible for declaring that its product complies with all regulations. No specific license is required to affix the CE marking, but the following steps must be followed for approval:

• Guaranteed product conformity: Making sure that the product complies with all relevant requirements at EU level.
• Product assessment: An authorized body or a specialized freight forwarder will help assess whether the product requires CE marking or is exempt.

• Technical file: Document product conformity using a detailed technical file. This documentation is necessary for demonstrating that the product complies with the established standards.

What should the CE marking look like and what are its characteristics

Once the product carries the CE marking, all related documentation must be made available to the authorities upon request at the customs office on entry into any EU country.

The CE marking must be visible, legible and must not be removable or erasable. The letters C and E must be of the same height and no less than 5mm high, unless otherwise specified. It can be affixed to the product, its packaging or accompanying documents, provided that the proportions and visibility of the marking are respected. Although it does not have a specific validity date, the declaration of conformity must be up-to-date.
